Australia First member
wins council seat
in Adelaide

Bruce Preece has stated that he wants to keep party politics out of local government; that he was elected to represent and assist local people on local issues.

Bruce believes that politicking is undesirable in councils, and that councils should not politicise themselves by using politics-laden techniques, such as declaring local zones to be “nuclear free” zones, “refugee welcome” zones, or other such political propaganda.

Mr Preece said that some have tried to use his membership of Australia First to carry out a McCarthyist-style campaign against him. He rejects such anti-democratic tactics, and says that any councillor should be able to be a member of any party or organisation, as that is a proper freedom in a democratic country.

Mr Preece looks forward to representing his local constituents regarding their local concerns.

A member of Australia First has won a council seat in Adelaide.

Mr. Bruce Preece is now a Councillor for St. John's Wood ward in Prospect City Council (the St. John's ward elects two councillors). Messages of congratulations have been pouring in from Australia First members and organisers.

Mr. Preece finished first in a field of three candidates. He beat a Labor member (who was also elected) and a Green activist. He now joins the city council as an independent (South Australian law does not permit councillors to sit as party representatives).

Mr. Preece ran a good solid campaign, leafleting the small ward a couple of times, placing advertisements in the local press, and doing extensive door-knocking.

We look forward to Mr. Preece's endeavours in this crucial area of political struggle.
